Happy Thursday everyone! If you’ve been following me on Instagram then you know by now that I’ve been redoing my entire master bedroom from scratch! I’ve been planning this bedroom design for a few months and seeing it slowly come to life before my eyes is very gratifying! The style I was going for was a coastal farmhouse master bedroom oasis.

If you love this style then look no further because I have figured out the best way to achieve this look on a budget!

My Goals For This Room

It’s important to have a set of goals that will help you achieve the look you want. That way you have something to fall back on when you are choosing the pieces for the room! I had 3 very specific goals for this room when I was designing it:

  • A very subtle coastal look. I wanted to make sure nothing in the room screamed COASTAL or BEACHY, while still getting that coastal FEEL.
  • Incorporating a modern farmhouse vibe, which is my main theme throughout the house.
  • Making sure those two styles mixed together perfectly.

Creating a mood board for your room makeover is essential if you want to stick to your goals, style, and budget! In this blog post, I show you 3 different ways to easily create a mood board for FREE!

But before you create your mood board you need to know what are the key elements that create the style you want!

How To Achieve A Subtle Coastal Look In Your Master Bedroom

There are certain key elements that create a coastal vibe. From furniture to colors to fabrics and materials. Implementing the proper elements into your bedroom will ensure you a beautiful, elegant coastal style.

Coastal Furniture: Coastal design normally calls for weathered, distressed, or whitewashed furniture. White beadboard is a fundamental element in coastal-style furniture as well.

Coastal Colors: Blue is the number one go-to color for designers when styling a coastal room because it reminds people of the ocean, plus it’s a very calming color!

Whites and creams are also staple colors in coastal rooms. They brighten up the room, like a sunny day at the beach!

Coastal Fabrics: Linens and cotton fabrics also create a very light and airy feel in a room. This is why they are so popular in coastal-style bedrooms!

Coastal Patterns: Stripes are very popular as well. And they can be applied anywhere, from walls to curtains to bedding and pillows, even furniture upholstery!

Cotton Throw Pillows

Coastal Plants: Palms, grasses, fiddle leaf figs, rosemary, magnolias, hydrangeas, orchids, the list goes on and on!

Adding plants to the room will give the room a pop of green which is also a great coastal color! It’s the perfect subtle way to implement greens in your decor!

Coastal Materials: There are many obvious materials for a coastal-themed bedroom. Shells, sand, corals, etc. But remember the goal is to create a SUBTLE coastal feel.

So simple materials such as glass, rope, seagrass, and driftwood are much better options and will mix perfectly with a modern farmhouse vibe!

How To Add A Modern Farmhouse Vibe

To effectively mix coastal with farmhouse I think we need to think in terms of MODERN FARMHOUSE! Because farmhouse designs might get a bit too “country” which could make it more difficult to mix with a coastal style.

There is nothing too specific to a modern farmhouse look as long as the end result looks like a modern version of a farmhouse style.

You can incorporate typical farmhouse designs such as shiplap, brick, and distressed furniture. Although there are some farmhouse elements I would steer clear from, such as the farm animal decor and chicken wire.

A MODERN farmhouse design style is essentially just a farmhouse style with a very simple and minimalistic look. Think clean and sleek lines, simple decor, and little to no clutter.

Now there are a few things that a modern farmhouse style DOES require. So let’s go over the key elements:

Modern Farmhouse Colors: Think neutrals! Whites, creams, and grays. Make sure to pick light colors throughout for a clean and simple look.

Modern Farmhouse Materials: Metals, natural woods, shiplap, brick, stone, concrete, leather, cotton, linen, and hyacinth, seagrass, or rattan baskets.

Modern Farmhouse Plants: Eucalyptus, cotton, lavender, rosemary, roses, hydrangeas, lilacs, daisies, and peonies!

I love eucalyptus plants so I try to incorporate them wherever I can! I love how this eucalyptus artwork (pictured below) has tones of blue in it which brings a bit of that coastal feel back.

Making The Two Styles Come Together Beautifully

There is nothing in this room that screams either COASTAL or FARMHOUSE. Since there are a few similar elements to these two styles it wasn’t too hard to mix them together.

I made sure to get pieces that could easily go with both styles. Such as the cotton and linen fabrics, the distressed nightstands, and the light and airy colors.

Coastal Farmhouse Nightstand

When designing any room, it’s always good to start with 1 or 2 pieces that you really like and everything else will come from that choice.

It could be a favorite piece of artwork or furniture. Pick something that you know you want to incorporate and slowly build the room around that!

Create balance by not overpowering one style over the other too much, otherwise, the other design style will get lost in the overall look.

And most importantly, have fun! Designing and decorating a space should be a fun and exciting time in which you can let your style and personailty shine! Don’t be afraid to mix things up and get creative!
