How To Design A Modern Farmhouse/Industrial Kids Room With A Neutral Theme – On A Budget!
I am super excited to share this modern farmhouse/industrial kids’ room with you guys! Working on the design for this room has been a super fun project for me! When going into the design of this room I knew I wanted to accomplish 3 things.
1. A Modern Farmhouse/Industrial Style
2. Neutral Colors Throughout with A Few Pops of Color
3. A Subtle Theme That Doesn’t Scream Little Kid Room
Creating a Design Board really helped me visualize the room before I put everything together.
My Modern Farmhouse/Industrial Kids Room Reveal!
If you are planning a kids’ room makeover with these same goals in mind then keep on reading! I will show you how to design a modern farmhouse/industrial style kids’ room with a neutral theme, no matter what theme you choose!
1. MODERN FARMHOUSE/INDUSTRIAL STYLE
So to achieve my first goal of creating a Modern Farmhouse/Industrial look, I knew I needed two main elements: Wood and Metal Finishes. I kept this in mind when choosing my furniture pieces and decorative accents as well.

Our Farmhouse/Industrial Bunk Bed
I looked around for the PERFECT bunk bed for my boys for a long time. Trying to figure out whether I wanted a wood or metal bunk bed was one of my dilemmas.
I didn’t want the metal bunk bed to look too modern because it simply wasn’t the look I was going for. So when I found this bunk bed with both metal and wood finishes, I instantly fell in love.
It checked off all the boxes of what I wanted. It has the option to convert into 2 twin beds. And it has tall side rails on the top bunk. Plus, it has that farmhouse/industrial look which I was going for!
The best part is HOW EASY it was to put together!
Industrial Computer Desk
So to keep the modern farmhouse/industrial style going, I decided to get a desk with a mix of wood and metal finishes as well. I found this very cost-effective rustic/industrial computer desk.
The MDF tabletop matches perfectly with the wood look of the bunk bed. It has a distressed/reclaimed look to it that I really like!
Industrial Metal Accents
Decorative accents are also essential in your overall design style. So make sure to add some industrial metal pieces throughout the room.
To complement the wood/metal furniture pieces I got this Hemnes Ikea Dresser in white stain.
Then I added these galvanized metal wall letters which were a great addition to my industrial look. Instead of hanging them though, I just placed them right on top of the dresser.
The black metal desk chair, metal wall file holder, and industrial desk lamp keep the black metal look throughout.
And I already had this super cool black metal ceiling fan which ties in perfectly with the whole modern farmhouse/industrial look.
2. DECORATING WITH NEUTRALS
I know it’s convenient to have a one-stop-shop for all your kids’ room decor. If you go to the kids’ section at a department store you’ll see lots of bright-colored themes throughout with all the decor accents to match.
But if you aren’t careful, your kids’ bedroom can end up looking……. well, like a themed showroom!
Even though this is a kids’ bedroom, I didn’t want too many colors everywhere. And let’s face it, a lot of times those department store kid-themed decor can look way too busy and cheap!
I know your kid probably loves the large multi-colored Mine Craft print or the obnoxiously pink Princess themes! But there is a way to compromise so that mom doesn’t get a headache every time she walks into the kids’ room!
So how do you pull off a neutral kids’ bedroom that both you and your kids will love?
Neutral Paint Colors
Neutral paint colors such as warm whites and grays will help give your child’s room a more mature and elegant look.
Pro Tip: It’s important to keep a consistent design flow in your home. If the rest of your home has light neutral colors but you have one room that has pastel or bright colors, it will feel off and separate from the home.
The paint colors I used here are from the Valspar line at Lowes. I have an off-white paint color on the walls named Snowed In. And the dark gray wall accent paint color is High-Speed Steel.
The dark gray paint color is still a neutral color, but it also adds a nice pop of color to the room. This color also makes this room feel more modern and youthful.
Neutral Bedsheets
Your child doesn’t have to sacrifice having their favorite characters in their bedroom! They can still have themed bedding while keeping things simple and neutral at the same time.
For my boys’ vehicle theme I incorporated neutral-color bed sheets that were still in theme with their favorite vehicles. Such as the bi-plane bed sheets and the construction zone bed sheets shown below (which have a different print now but are still pretty neutral).
You can find neutral-colored bedding in many themes. In fact, I really love the Jay Franco line at Amazon for its extensive kids’ bedding selections and their affordability!
You can always BUY CHEAP as long as it LOOKS EXPENSIVE!
Neutral Pillow Covers and Blankets
And no matter what theme you choose, you can incorporate these cute word pillow throw covers!
I also got these super soft and comfy fleece blankets in the Grey color to keep that neutral look throughout.
Note: If your child’s theme bed sheets have some pop of color in them you can incorporate those colors in their throw pillows, blankets, and comforters. This will add a nice pop of color while still keeping a consistent neutral theme.
Neutral Rugs
Having a rug in a kids’ room is important. It gives them a comfortable area to play on and a soft space to sit and read a book.
But I believe a neutral, light-colored rug is essential for a kids’ room. A colorful rug can make the room look too busy and fussy.
On the other hand, a neutral rug is calm, relaxing, and pleasing to the eye. Not to mention great for when it’s time to pick up legos! You moms know what I mean!
So to keep the neutral flow I got this 5×7 area rug.
The pattern is fun and youthful and it goes perfectly with the rest of the whites, creams, and gray neutrals in the room. Not to mention the fact that it lightens up the room by covering up a chuck of the dark wood floors!
3. A SUBTLE THEME
Part of creating a subtle theme is by incorporating lots of neutrals. But we’ve already gone over that.
Now it’s time to add some pops of color throughout the room with some decorative accents while still keeping things nice and simple. Let me show you how.
Use What You Already Have
I used lego sets that the boys’ built to decorate their dresser top. I am a big fan of using your kids’ own toys to decorate and style their bedroom.
That way you use what you already have, (which is very cost-effective) AND you are decorating with pieces you know your kids love, their toys!
These legos add a great pop of color to the room as well!
Use Letter Boards Instead of Decorative Signs
If your childs’ theme has a cute or catchy phrase that you would like to incorporate in the decor, consider putting it on a letter board!
For example, I knew I wanted to incorporate the popular vehicle theme phrase: “PLANES TRAINS TRUCKS AND TOYS, THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE LITTLE BOYS”.
I didn’t like any of the options online or in-store, so I decided to get this 12×12 letter board, and I just wrote it myself!
This turned out to be the perfect solution because it kept the simple, neutral theme I was going for.
Shop Around
Remember what I mentioned about a one-stop-shop? You want their decorative pieces to work well together without looking like they all came from the same aisle at Target.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Target and Walmart and all department stores! The point is to SHOP AROUND different stores and find pieces that you and your kiddos love!
Shopping around for the perfect pieces took a little longer but it made the room that much more special and unique!

This Natural Wood Magnetic Hanger Frame Poster is a cute little display of all the different types of vehicles in alphabetical order for my vehicle/transportation theme.
*Note: You can buy a similar magnetic wood poster frame like the one below and add your own printable to it. It’s such a cute and fun way to display wall art!
I also got this vehicle theme hamper basket which I use to store all their stuffed animals and throw pillows. It’s simple, in theme, budget-friendly and useful! Can’t get any better than that!
Note: You can find neutral hampers like this one for almost any theme on Amazon!
Vintage decor can really make a kids’ room look more elegant and grown-up.
So I got my son, Nathan, (the airplane lover) some cute vintage airplane decor in red because it’s his favorite color! You can find vintage decor for many themes!
Shop My Vintage Airplane Look
On top of their cubby furniture piece I again just added some of their own toys for decoration, such as the wooden train tracks and the little sailboat.
The wooden toys give it an old-school feel which adds to the vintage look. And I found this cute little globe at Hobby Lobby which also gives off a vintage vibe.
I styled their desk area with some more of their favorites, CARS! Such as this car wall frame, this corvette emblem sign, and this awesome car nightlight that looks like a floating virtual image!
In the end, I think the 3 design strategies that I implemented in this room worked out beautifully. My vision for it was finally realized and I’m so happy with the way it turned out.
I think this is definitely a room that my kids can grow into and love for a long time. It just has a timeless look!
