How To Clean Your Dirty Sidewalk In 3 Easy Steps!
If your sidewalk or driveway is starting to turn a uniform gray/brown color, then it’s time to clean it! And I have a quick and easy hack to do this! See how to clean your sidewalk in 3 easy steps!
Over time your concrete sidewalk can get a lot of dirt build-up as well as mold and mildew stains.
Here is my sidewalk before cleaning it. As you can see, it has completely changed color from all the dirt and mildew!
If your sidewalk looks like this, don’t worry! My quick hack will have it clean in just minutes! Let’s get right into how to clean your dirty sidewalk!
1. BUY POOL CHLORINATING LIQUID
The key to getting the mold and mildew out of the sidewalk and/or driveway is to use a pool chlorinating liquid.
If you have a local pool store near you I suggest you get your chlorine directly from them.
We purchased a bucket and took it to a local pool shop which they then fill up for us for about $5.00 a gallon.
Otherwise, you can purchase pool chlorinating liquid at big box stores such as Lowes, Home Depot, and Walmart.
2. MIX SOLUTION
You may use 100% of the pool chlorinating liquid for the really dirty areas. But for the most part, you can dilute it with water for a more gentle approach with good results.
To do this, pour 1 part pool chlorinating liquid and 1 part water into a 2 gallon pump sprayer.
Always test a small, inconspicuous area of the sidewalk first to make sure no damage is done. Once the area is dry and there is no damage then you may proceed to spray the entire sidewalk.
3. SPRAY SIDEWALK
The chlorine can damage your clothing and shoes, so make sure to wear work attire that you don’t mind potentially bleaching. You should also wear a protective mask or respirator that filters chemicals, gases, and fumes.
TIP: Make sure to do this on a warm and sunny day! This way, the solution will dry quickly.
First, make sure to remove any loose dirt and/or debris. You can use a broom or blower for this. Once your sidewalk is free of any loose particles you may start spraying your sidewalk with the solution you prepared.
Start at one end of the sidewalk and work backward, to avoid stepping in the area you just sprayed.
Make sure to cover the entire sidewalk as you spray.
If the sidewalk still has some dirtiness you may spray it again as soon as it is done drying. There is no need to rinse the sidewalk once you are done, but you may do so.
NOTE: Any grass by the sidewalk will most likely die but if you are careful, it will only be near the edge of the sidewalk. And it will grow back strong and healthy again in just a couple of weeks.
WARNING: The smell of chlorine may be strong, depending on the concentration of your solution and the amount of area you sprayed. This may linger for about 2 days. But the results will be completely worth it!
