Do you want your home to be cozy and elegant? I believe your home can be beautiful and sophisticated, yet still be a warm and inviting place for you and your family. But wanting a cozy home and actually creating one are two completely different things! I often find that many people just don’t know how to make their home feel cozy and warm. So today I will be sharing 10 proven ways to INSTANTLY cozy up your home! Let’s get right into it!

1. Lighting

Let’s start off with the most important element of a cozy home, your lighting. Even if you do everything on the rest of this list, it won’t matter if you don’t have the right lighting in your home!

So what is the WRONG lighting if you want a cozy home? White light! Please steer clear of white fluorescent lights in your home! Whether it is indoors or outdoors, white lighting makes a space look cold and dreary.

What to do: Get incandescent lighting! It doesn’t have to be orange, but it needs to be warm! After all, that is the feeling you are looking for when creating a cozy space. Warm and inviting!

The Kelvin Color Temperature Scale is a great guide that will help you decide which temperature is best for you.

I like to stick within the 2700k – 3500k range. Especially for cozier rooms such as bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and outdoors.

Warm Yellow Lighting

Pro Tip: Layer your lighting so that you have a variety of different accent lighting throughout the room. Incorporate floor lamps and table lamps as well as chandeliers and recessed lights. Apply dimmer switches to the main lighting in your home so that you can choose the level of brightness in the space.

2. Warm Paint Colors

Grays became the most popular neutral paint color in the late 2010s but if you haven’t heard by now…gray is out and beige is back!

Warm whites are the go-to neutral paint color right now. And they are perfect for warming up any room in your home!

3. Curtains

Incorporating soft fabrics and linens throughout a room can make it feel cozy in itself. Curtains are a great way to add these materials to your windows and french doors.

Flowy Curtains On Double Rod

Whenever possible I like to layer up my curtains with a double rod. This way I get nice light and airy sheer curtains behind my thicker curtains.

Pro Tip: Place your curtains as high as possible on the wall to make the room feel bigger and grand. Also, make sure the curtains touch the floor. They can even go a few inches past the floor for a nice flowy look. This also helps create a cozy feel.

Note: Department stores usually won’t carry curtains past 84 or 96 inches. If your ceilings are taller than 8 feet you’ll need to purchase 108″ or 120″ curtains online. These faux linen curtains come in a variety of sizes and colors for the perfect cozy room!

4. Area Rugs

Area rugs are a huge cozy factor in any room! Without a rug, the room is just not complete!

It covers up the flooring with a soft and furry place to step on. Plus it anchors and defines the room’s space.

Area Rug In Living Room

Getting the right size area rug is essential though! Normally you want to make sure that all or most furniture pieces are partially under the rug.

5. Throw Pillows And Blankets

For me, cozy is equal to comfy. And you can’t get comfy without a soft blanket to snuggle up in or fluffy pillows to rest your head.

Not only are these elements comfy in themselves but they really do help give the room an overall cozy feel. It’s like your home is inviting you to sit down and relax!

6. Wicker Baskets

Wicker baskets are the number one element you can use to cozy up literally any room in your home! And they have such a wide variety of use!

Bathroom baskets can hold towels and creams. While bedroom and living room baskets can hold all those extra throw pillows and blankets! Even the pantry can get a facelift with cute little baskets to organize all your goods!

Wicker baskets easily warm up any space, plus they offer a natural element, which is a key factor in cozy rooms.

8. Florals and Greenery

Bringing in other natural elements, such as florals and greenery, can make your home feel cozy and friendly.

Adding the right amount of plants is essential though. You don’t want to overdo it, otherwise, your living room can end up looking like a sunroom!

Faux Plants In Vases

If you don’t have a green thumb, I highly suggest getting faux plants. Just make sure to get plants that look as real as possible, otherwise, your greenery can easily end up looking fake, cheap, and tacky!

7. Candles

Oxford Dictionaries defines the word cozy as: giving a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation.

I don’t know about you, but every time I light a candle I feel instantly relaxed and ready to snuggle up with a cup of coffee and a good book.

Cozy Candle Flame

The glowing flame gives off a warm feel to the room in more ways than one. And the pleasant aromas that fill up the room give you a sense of tranquility and cleanliness. Can you tell I love candles? Who doesn’t right?

The best part is that adding candles to your decor is such an easy and affordable way to instantly cozy up any room in your home!

9. Books

Books are one of those decorative items that just scream COZY!

Because where there are books, there is reading, and where there is reading there is someone in a relaxing setting!

Stacked Books On Dresser

So go ahead and display your favorite books on your shelves! Or stack a few books on your coffee table and nightstands for decorative purposes.

10. Wall Decor

Your walls are super important if you want to cozy up your home! Plain walls are very unattractive! Wall decor is the best way to make them stand out!

Wall Photo Gallery

There are a variety of ways to decorate your walls. You can style your walls with canvas art, framed art, framed pictures, collage frames, a large clock, sconces, mirrors, shelves, macrame, etc.

The point is to accessorize the walls and the room. Because a plain and simple space feels dull. A well-accessorized space feels interesting and welcoming.
