Trying to style a king-size bed to look like the ones you see in magazines can seem like a laborious task. A professionally styled master bed looks great and all, but then you realize you have to make your bed every morning!

And the thing is, who would want to when you have A MILLION pillows, comforters, quilts, coverlets, and blankets?! I even know some design influencers who have admitted to NOT making their bed every day!

Well, I am here to tell you that you CAN style a beautiful master bed WITHOUT a million pillows and layers! And I am going to show you how to style a king-size bed in 7 easy steps!

NOTE: You can apply these exact styling tips to a Queen-Size Bed as well!

1. CORRECT SIZING

Start with your basic sheet set (fitted sheet, sheet, and pillow covers) and go from there.

Make sure you have a sheet set that fits your bed nicely. You don’t want it to be too big because it can make your bed look messy if it’s not nice and snug.

But you also don’t want it too snug where the sheets are always pulling away from your mattress!

Mattresses nowadays are designed to be very deep so make sure you get a sheet set that covers THE DEPTH of your mattress.

King Size Bed Basic Sheets

Check the size of your mattress and pillows and make sure to get the correct size. Don’t just go by “King Size” or “Queen Size” because those can vary.

Note: It’s okay if the pillow cover extends further than the pillow if that is the style and look you are going for.

2. GO VERTICAL

Okay now on to the actual styling part of this tutorial! To style a king-size bed you have to start off right.

The very first thing you need to do is place your basic pillows vertically and in front of each other, instead of stacking them up on top of each other.

Basic Sheets For Your King Size Bed

This will elevate the look of your bed and kind of give it a facelift! Placing your pillows vertically also helps bring everything more forward. Which is great because it takes up more space on your bed!

The less space you will need to fill up with pillows and blankets right? And we are just using our bedding essentials to create “layers”!

NOTE: Make sure to fold the top of your sheet just in front of your basic pillows.

3. MORE IS LESS

Now it’s time to add your decorative pillows. Don’t worry I am going to make this super simple!

Instead of layering a million little pillows on your bed, get 3 OVERSIZED pillows! MORE in size is LESS is quantity!

Extra Large Throw Pillows

I have 3 26″ throw pillows on my king-size mattress. For a Queen size, you could get 3 24″ throw pillows.

Not only will you have fewer pillows to put away at night but large throw pillows will look more aesthetically pleasing and proportional to a king-size bed. Especially if you have a tall headboard like me!

4. LAYER WITH A LUMBAR PILLOW

Okay…. so you can stay with the 3 pillows. But layering another pillow in front will look even better!

And don’t worry I will show you an easy way to put them all away at night when you are getting ready for bed.

Adding this LONG lumbar pillow helps to fill up the space and complete the look!

5. Fold Your Comforter

Professional decorators and designers love to layer a lot of comforters and blankets. But who needs all of those?

Instead of layering a bunch of unnecessary comforters and quilts on your bed, fold the one you have!

PRO TIP: An oversized comforter is best so that once you fold it you still have a large area of your bed covered up!

I got an oversized duvet comforter insert with this duvet cover.

There are two easy ways to fold a comforter over the bed.

You can fold it twice towards the top, just below all of the decorative pillows.

Or just fold the comforter in half and place it over the bottom half of my bed.

Folding your comforter will give it a fuller look which is very important since we are not adding too many layers.

But you don’t want large beautifully layered pillows with a frumpy quilt placed flat on your bed.

6. Layer One Blanket

Even though you want a “LESS IS MORE” approach when styling your king-size bed, you still need to add a couple of layers to give it that professional look.

So add ONE layer over your comforter. This could be a blanket, quilt, coverlet, etc. But it needs to be long enough to fall over each end of the bed!

I got this beautiful coverlet from the Hearth And Hand collection at Target and I just love how it drapes over the comforter.

7. Find The Right Storage

Okay, so we got away with styling our King-Size bed with just 4 pillows and 1 extra blanket!

And I have to say, making this bed every morning is a breeze. I have mastered a technique and I get it done in 2 minutes tops!

But putting away those extra decorative pillows and blankets is key to getting it done smoothly! So how do I do it? With the right storage!

Storage For Decorative Pillows And Blankets

I quickly and easily put away my 3 throw pillows in this 21″ long basket that I got from Marshalls. They have a great selection of large baskets with very affordable price tags!

Now I know what you might be thinking, how does a 26″ pillow fit in a 21″ long basket?

Remember that the shape of a pillow is easily molded. So this large throw pillow drops right in. I like to place the other 2 on top to not squeeze them in together and have them lose their shape over time.

Ready For Bed In One Minute

I also got this beautiful blue bench to hold my long lumbar pillow and blanket. Everything else on the bed is what we sleep with so there is no need to store it away!

I am ready for bed in less than one minute! How easy was that?!
