How I Created an Enchanted Harry Potter Halloween Home
Creating an enchanting Harry Potter Halloween home has always been a dream of mine. So this year I decided to go all out! Mind you, I am also doing a Harry Potter birthday party the day after Halloween for my son who will be turning 11! Perfect right?! And, I will be doing a Harry Potter Christmas theme as well! So I figured I could splurge a little on Harry Potter decor this year!
But no worries, I am going to show you exactly how I transformed my home into a magical Harry Potter Halloween world without having to go over budget!
Harry Potter Props
To create a Harry Potter world you will inevitably need Harry Potter props. There are soooo many options when it comes to Harry Potter as it is such an extensive world. You can even have themes within your Harry Potter theme and get props for those!
Movie Themed Props
For example, you can have a Sorcerer’s Stone theme where you get props like the letters to Hogwarts coming out of your fireplace, the sorting hat, the flying keys, and the wizard’s chess game.
My home doesn’t have a specific movie theme but I did get all of these props because I am also creating a Harry Potter Escape Room for my son’s birthday which will be based on the first movie. However, as you will see I also have props from the third movie (my favorite) such as the time turner necklace, and the I Solemnly Swear That I Am Up To No Good ribbon.
Hogwarts House Colors
You can also add a touch of personality to your Harry Potter Halloween home by having a specific Hogwarts House theme such as Gryffindor or Slytherin.
My boys are Gryffindors so we added some Gryffindor decorative pieces I found on Amazon. I honestly didn’t need much, just a couple of pillow covers that gave me Gryffindor vibes and a Gryffindor throw blanket.
That did the trick! It instantly added a Gryffindor common room vibe to my living room.
Otherwise you can buy or create banners for all of the Hogwarts houses for a school spirit vibe.
General Harry Potter Props
There are also general Harry Potter props that are really popular Halloween items in recent years. I am referring to the famous floating witch hats and floating candles!
The floating candles give Great Hall vibes so I hung them over my dining table. If you don’t want to risk damage your ceiling, I suggest hanging them on your chandelier!
Harry Potter printables are a super affordable way to add instant props to your home! I used this set of Harry Potter prints on my existing gallery wall. I simply replaced my frames with cheap gold picture frames from Dollar Tree and filled them with pictures of Hogwarts teachers and characters.
Then there are some Harry Potter props that are non negotiable! Mainly, Hedwig in her cage!
I mean, how stinking cute is she?! I found the perfect cage for her which already brought a crow skeleton inside so I placed it somewhere else as part of my Halloween decor.
The point is, to achieve a Harry Potter Halloween home, specific Harry Potter decor will be needed. The amount you get is up to you. I say the more the merrier!
Give Your Halloween Decor a Harry Potter Purpose
Now that you have some Harry Potter props you can embellish your home with your regular Halloween decor. And you probably already have plenty of Halloween items that you could use for your Harry Potter Halloween home. Witch hats are perfect for hanging or placing them on the heads of random Halloween decor such as skeletons.
I placed a hat on a black cat that I found at Michaels and BOOM! Professor McGonagall is in the house!
But seriously any witch decor will do! So grab your cauldrons, potions and broomsticks!
You might think your Halloween decor doesn’t mesh well with the Harry Potter magical world. Wrong! As I said, the Harry Potter world is EXTENSIVE! There is nothing that J.K. Rowling doesn’t cover. So bring out your skulls, ghosts, werewolves, snakes and spiders. It will ALL be Harry Potter Halloween theme!
For example, I always decorate my front porch area with large spiders and this year was no exception. But just adding ONE item to the mix instantly gave my Halloween decor a Harry Potter twist.
The “Follow the Spiders” DIY sign now brings visitors back to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets where Harry and Ron follow the spiders to meet Aragog and his family. I decided to also add a bunch of little spiders leading to the front door for emphasis. I even hot glued some to the wall!
Anything is possible in your Harry Potter Halloween home! A snake can become a Slytherin symbol or a Basilisk, a rat can become Scabbers.
A toad can be Neville’s lost pet. Crows can surround pumpkins outside for a Hagrid’s hut vibe.
There are literally endless options. Just examine the Halloween decor you already have and think of ways to give it Harry Potter twist.
Harry Potter Items You Didn’t Know You Had
Before purchasing any Harry Potter decor I suggest you take inventory of what Harry Potter Items you may already have. You might be surprised to find that you have plenty to work with!
For example, Harry Potter books are not only stimulating to read but they make great statement pieces as well! You can place a book beneath other decorative items such as candles or stack them up with a witch hat on top! I did get this Harry Potter candle carousel which adds such a magical touch to my Halloween decor!
Other Harry Potter items you might already have are costumes! If you have the full set with scarves, ties and glasses you can certainly use them as props in your home! A Gryffindor scarf placed over a basket creates a lovely touch. Or a cloak hanging on a hook in the entryway invites you to a world of magic where anything is possible.
Last but not least, look for any Harry Potter toys you might have. Whether they belong to you or your kids, I won’t judge. But use the Hogwarts Castle Legos or the Hogwarts Express Train to embellish your Harry Potter Halloween home.

BONUS: DIY Harry Potter Crafts
Just because I am EXTRA I decided to make a few Harry Potter props of my own. As I said I am going all out with Harry Potter EVERYTHING this year! Including my son’s birthday and Christmas!
Here are some simple DIY Harry Potter crafts that took my Halloween home to the next level!
1. Harry Potter Potions
I got these Harry Potter potion labels on Etsy and placed them on bottles of different size and shape that I bought or recycled. I did spray paint them black but you don’t have to. Finally, I glued the labels onto my bottles with Mod Podge.
2. Mirror of Erised
I snagged this black mirror at Michaels and painted it with Rub’nBuff!
3. Flying Keys
This flying keys set from Amazon brings the keys and the wings. So all I had to do was hot glue them together.
I actually did this DIY Harry Potter craft for my son’s Harry Potter birthday where I created an entire escape room for him and his friends. They had to find the right key to open a lock which I attached to a wooden box from Michaels.
4. Tea Reading
For this simple DIY craft I used Mod Podge to brush on the image of the Grim onto my coffee cup. Then I sprinkled coffee grinds on top which easily stuck to the glue. I used a Crayola marker to write the words: My dear, you have the Grim.
5. Harry Potter Prints
The fat lady portrait will not let you enter the Gryffindor tower (aka my sons’ room) without the correct password!
I wanted to add more Harry Potter “Props” without spending more money so I simply copied and pasted some prints I found online and printed them on cardstock paper! I attached them with double sided tape but please be careful with these as they are heavy duty!
Fluffy is taped onto my husband’s office door which I thought was fitting. And Moaning Myrtle is of course lounging in the bathroom!
6. Smoking Cauldon
For this simple DIY I just placed this mist maker in my cauldron with a couple inches of water.
These are just few of the DIY Harry Potter crafts I made. If you want to see more stay tuned for the next couple of blog posts:
