2023 Best Christmas Decor Tips – Shop Smart And Intentionally
Christmas decor is in stores and it can be tempting to just start grabbing everything off the shelves! I know! I’ve been there and done that! That is why today I am sharing my 4 best Christmas decor tips!
I want you to know how to shop intentionally and not blindly! This can save you a lot of money in the long run! Let’s get right into it!
1. KNOW YOUR THEME
Without a theme, your Christmas decor can look really messy! So the very first thing you should do before buying ANYTHING is to PLAN your Christmas decor.
FIGURE OUT YOUR CHRISTMAS THEME
Will it be reindeer? Santa? Christmas trees? Snowflakes? Nativity? Keep in mind that a theme can also just be a color or a set of colors throughout your Christmas decor.
For example, your theme can be “Traditional Christmas”. The colors will be your traditional red gold and green. Or you can have a plaid theme, with plaid blankets and decor. Or just a simple color theme. Like blue and silver Christmas, rose gold, etc.
Just figuring out what theme you want will help you immensely when you are shopping.
FIGURE OUT YOUR STYLE
Another important part of knowing your theme is knowing your style. Do you like minimalistic decor? Traditional decor? Rustic decor?
For example, if you want to do a reindeer theme Christmas (like I did last year) knowing the style you want will help you decide whether you want simple deer decor or rustic deer decor.

2. GO THROUGH YOUR INVENTORY
Now that you know your theme you need to go through your inventory first and foremost. Most of us forget the things we have from previous Christmasses.
So check your Christmas inventory before you go out and buy a large wooden Christmas tree, that is super similar to the one you already have in the attic…
Doing so will save you time and money in the long run! Trust me!
3. GET THE BASICS
Okay so you know your theme, and you know what you have in stock already. Now it’s time to shop intentionally.
Here is my NUMBER ONE Christmas Decor tip not only for this year’s Christmas theme but for the rest of your Christmas themes from now on. Are you ready?
GET THE BASICS!
What do I mean by this?
Well if you want to be able to achieve a different theme every year without spending a lot of money on new decor, then you need to buy PLAIN Christmas basics.
What are the basics? Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, swags, etc. You want to get plain ones without any special decor on them, such as pine cones, berries, or any ornaments of any kind.
That way you can add your own and have “NEW” and different decor every year without breaking the bank!
This is how designers decorate for Christmas. And this gives you the freedom to add whatever you want to your basic Christmas decor.
So instead of buying a different wreath or garland every year, you can embellish the one you already have.
4. CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Another super important Christmas decor tip is consistency! Whatever your theme is, you need to be consistent throughout your home with it. That is why getting the basics is so important! Now you can easily match the outside decor to your inside decor.
And it doesn’t take much! Sometimes just ribbons and picks are enough to achieve the theme you are going for that year.
Apply the same ribbon and/or picks and stems to your wreaths, garlands, Christmas trees, and swags.
Below are some of my favorite ribbons and picks for Christmas decorating.
Even your Christmas presents should be in theme! Use simple wrapping paper that is in theme with your decor. And use the same ribbon to keep a cohesive Christmas look throughout your home.
Now you have a visual and intentional theme throughout your home that looks like you gave it a lot of thought. Because you did!
BONUS TIP! USE NATURAL MATERIALS
The last of my Christmas decor tips is a personal preference but one I found holds value.
If you are anything like me, you ABSOLUTELY LOVE decorating for Christmas, but then, all of the Christmas decor overwhelms you and you don’t know how you are going to live with it for over a month!
That is why I suggest you stick to “natural materials.”
What do I mean by this? I mean woods, greenery, and metals. This will help a lot once you put everything up because we see these materials on a day-to-day basis.
We all have wood in our homes, greenery, etc. So we naturally find them aesthetically pleasing.
WHAT TO STAY AWAY FROM
So what am I saying to steer clear of exactly? GLITTER!
And don’t get me wrong… I LOVE glitter just as much as the next person. In fact, I gravitate toward ALL THE GLITTER when I go Christmas shopping. But I’ve noticed that it does tend to overwhelm me a bit once I put it all up!
HOW TO ADD SPARKLE IN WAYS OTHER THAN GLITTER
A beautiful, shiny and natural material you can add to your Christmas decor is GOLD! I love gold-hanging bells and gold bell garlands! They add that natural sparkle and shine that you might crave during the holidays!
Another way to add some sparkle and magic is with twinkly string lights!
You can even get away with adding a few shiny and glittery ornaments!
Remember, these are just tips though. So if glitter makes you happy! Go for it! But if you must have the glitter, get some natural elements in there anyways to tone it down a bit!
MORE WAYS TO ADD NATURAL MATERIALS TO YOUR CHRISTMAS DECOR
I also like to cozy my Christmas up with faux fur pillows and accent rugs. Maybe some leather accents. And a knit throw blanket to get comfy in!
This will give you all the cozy and elegant vibes. It will be beautiful and it WON’T feel uncomfortable to live in!
Plus, these are materials that will help decorate your home not just for the Christmas season but throughout all Winter long! In fact, I have a whole blog post on How To Decorate For Winter After Christmas!
